Abort the Patriarchy

I am truly heartbroken. I feel defeated, furious, distressed… The list goes on. Roe V Wade has been overturned by the supreme court, meaning the right to abortion is being taken away from millions. A right that has protected people since 1973. I never thought this would happen, as a society surely, we should be past this ancient way of thinking. The government cares more about unborn foetuses than living people. If you are not speaking out about this, you are part of the problem. The patriarchal idea that women must be controlled is getting boring.

Let’s look at it this way: guns have more rights than women.

Whether you live in the US or not, this affects you. This isn’t just a problem for those with uteruses, it’s a human rights problem. Also, before you try and justify your pro-life bullshit with some bible quotes or talk about how your religion prohibits such sins, fun fact, the bible says nothing about abortion and how it is forbidden. You have every right to not get an abortion, to not have pre-marital sex etc… you can do whatever you feel is right within your faith, but you cannot dictate what I can and can’t do with my life and my body.

If the idea that not everyone wants to support a book makes you angry, maybe you should re-read it and learn to stop judging, instead treating those around you with love. Something that is consistently mentioned in the bible, unlike abortion.

The same people who are protesting abortion are the same who yelled ‘my body my choice’ when being asked to get vaccinated. Hypocritical much?

The majority of people deciding whether women should have these rights are old, rich, white males. Shocking, I know. In the states that abortion is made illegal, it’ll even be criminalised in instances of rape or incest. Not that the reason you choose to have the procedure matters as such.

Banning abortions does not stop them, it only stops safe abortions. According to a 2009 study, 68,000 women around the world die from unsafe abortions. More people will die from having unsafe abortions and many will commit suicide. Others may be left with severe mental health issues. The lack of free healthcare won’t help when people need them more than ever. How will the US cope when their people begin to fall apart?

Forbidding abortions is a death sentence to many. The treatment for an ectopic pregnancy is abortion. The treatment for a septic uterus is abortion. The treatment for some miscarriages is abortion. If you are prohibited from having this procedure, you die. You can claim to be ‘pro-life’ yet you will allow more people to die, than live.

The sad thing is, this could have easily been stopped. Barack Obama had the choice to codify the Roe law in 2009 / 2010 yet didn’t. Maybe if sexual education was more comprehensive and contraception was free, there would be less need for abortions. Just a thought.

People claim this law is to ‘save children’ and ‘stop killing innocent babies’, yet if that’s the case, why aren’t gun laws being changed? Why are firearms so readily available? Each day 12 innocent children are being killed from gun violence, yet nothing is done to stop this. If they really wanted to ‘save children’, they would know that criminalising abortion means more children will be born into poverty, into homes where they are unwanted and abused, further leaving to more child suicides. The abuse rates will get higher and violence will be normalised. Crime rates will go up and the economy will fail.

It shows how the overturning of Roe V Wade is not to ‘save children’, it’s to remove basic human rights - and trust me, this is only the beginning.
